Abstract

Abstract

Thomas Mann predicted that no manner or mode in literature would be so typical or so pervasive in the twentieth century as the grotesque. Assuredly he was correct. The subjects and methods of our comic literature (and much of our other literature) are regularly disturbing and often repulsive -- no laughing matter. In this ambitious study, John R. Clark seeks to elucidate the major tactics and topics deployed in modern literary dark humor. In Part I he explores the satiric strategies of authors of the grotesque, strategies that undercut conventional usage and form: the de-basement of heroes, the

Abstract

This autumn season, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is presenting Surrealism and the Dream, the first monographic exhibition devoted to the visual approach of Surrealist artists to the oneiric world. Curated by Jose Jimenez, the show advances Surrealism as an attitude towards life whose roots delve deep into the relationship between image and dream. The comprehensive array of photographs, paintings, collages, objects, sculptures and films that visitors will be able to enjoy points to the blurred nature of the borderline between reality and what appears before us in our dreams.

Abstract

In this brilliantly insightful and profound study, in which Carla Gottlieb analyzes contemporary art and artists from 1945 to the present, the following basic questions are covered: in which direction is art heading, why is that direction being taken, what is the nature of its achievements, and to what extent do previous achievements color this nature. Drawing extensively on the statements made by modern artists and providing a detailed discussion of a relatively few examples, Dr. Gottlieb gives her analyses in these main sections: A Prelude with Chairs; Why Create? Why Art?; The Democratization of the Art Object; Developments in Content; Uproar in Form; Storming the Barriers: The Aesthetics of the Merger; The Desanctification of the Artist and the Desacralization of the Art Object; The Disavowal of the Art Object; Attempt at a Trial Balance.
